Is photography your hobby or your profession?
Chris Gin: It's my hobby, I do it purely for fun.
How and when did you get into photography?
Chris Gin: I got into photography at the end of 2007. I stumbled upon sites such as Flickr and InterfaceLift and saw all these amazing photos, and I wondered if I could take anything as good as those. I started reading about photography on the internet, particularly regarding composition and exposure, and then decided to buy a second hand DSLR to try it for myself.
What kind of equipment and software do you use?
Chris Gin: I started out with a Canon EOS 350D and now use a Canon EOS 40D. The lenses I use for my landscapes are the Sigma 10-20 and Tamron 17-50. I also make use of graduated neutral density filters which are invaluable for landscapes as they balance the light between bright skies and darker foregrounds. The software I use are Lightroom 2 and Photoshop CS3.
Is photography difficult? How do I become a good photographer?
Chris Gin: It's not that difficult although there is a lot to learn. The most important thing is a good eye for composition. This is hard to teach and good photographers tend to naturally have this ability to some degree. The technical details of exposure and post-processing are of course important but there is a lot of information on the internet and it's just a case of taking the time to read and understand it all. Above all it takes practice, by taking shots and learning from your mistakes. Getting critiques from experienced photographers is also necessary to improve.
What is special about landscape photography?
Chris Gin: For me it's the most beautiful type of photography - capturing nature at its best is just so rewarding. It's impossible to plan 100% how a shot is going to look due to the fact you're relying on the weather and light at a certain point in time, so when you find a beautiful location AND get the right conditions, it just all comes together and you end up with an amazing shot, capturing that moment forever.
Thank you very much.
